Ron Holt is the founder of Pink Zebra Moving; a local moving franchise brand that disrupts its industry by delivering unique and remarkable customer experiences. Prior to Pink Zebra Moving, Ron grew Two Maids & A Mop into a nationally-recognized franchise brand with nearly 100 locations across the country.
Tell us your best small idea for big business wins
My mother-in-law had a terrible experience while moving into a new home. It was awful, the worst. It was so bad that I decided to check reviews of other moving companies in my local area. They were awful too. So then I checked other markets and discovered that moving sucked for everyone from Seattle to Miami. It was on that day that I decided to sell my $40M residential cleaning company to start a moving company. A small idea that has already produced big victories for my family, coworkers, franchisees and future customers.
Tell us about you; your background;
I opened a small cleaning business more than 20 years ago with a goal of building into a national brand with locations across the country. It took me two years to earn a profit and three years to earn a paycheck. I served as chief housecleaner during the early days and later evolved into the brand’s CEO overseeing all operations for our 93 locations across the country. It was a dream come true for a small town boy from rural southern Georgia. I sold Two Maids & A Mop in 2021 to focus on my next venture; Pink Zebra Moving. We plan on creating a new category of movers by delivering a better, more positive customer experience. Currently, we only serve five markets but have an aggressive growth strategy of opening 15-20 new locations per year over the next five years.
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as the real challenge right now?
Steve Jobs once said that he believed most entrepreneurial success stories were the result of someone working longer and harder than everyone else. I believe him. I’ve proven it time after time over my 20-year career in the home services industry. I’ve never been the smartest or richest guy in the room, but I’ve always been the hardest working guy in the room. I’ll work harder and longer than anyone you know – not because I love working – but because I know exactly where I’m going. I know my work will eventually produce a victory. I know that I’ll eventually reach my goals. Sure, it may take me 20 years…but I’ll never give up. Most people don’t have that kind of stamina, but the ultra-successful ones do. That’s the biggest challenge facing our current and future entrepreneurs. Can you work harder and longer than your competitor? Can you persevere when everyone tells you stop? Can you overcome the urge to quit when nothing is working? That’s the real challenge today, in my opinion.
On a lighter note, if you had the ability to pick any business superpower, what would it be and how would you put it into practice?
Vision. Entrepreneurs always start out with a big dream but the day to day nuances of a business typically pushes all of those fun dreams out the window. Without vision, the daily struggles and headaches seem like painful moments that you just want to go away. But with vision, those same struggles and headaches can seem like necessary steps towards your larger goal of building the business into a dominant market player.
What does “success” in 2023 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision.
That’s easy. We plan to open at least 15 new Pink Zebra Moving locations in 2023. Opening a new franchise requires a strong franchise sales team, strong franchise support and a strong franchise training process. All of that work is a necessity for us to open at least 15 new locations this year. Anything short of our goal would be a serious disappointment. However, we’re going to crush the goal and open even more than 15 new locations this year!
