Winter is finally over, and the spring season has arrived. It’s warmer outside, which means that you can start updating your patio space. Here are a few tips to help you get your home’s patio area ready for spring weather.
1. Make Necessary Repairs
Before you begin decorating and creating just the right patio space to enjoy, look for anything that needs to be repaired. This could be anything from steps that are broken to banisters that are cracked and need to be replaced. Once everything is safe for your family and friends to enjoy, you can then begin cleaning and designing an oasis for the warmer months ahead.
2. Think About Function
Think about how you’re going to use your patio. If you plan to eat outdoors, then you want to make sure there is a grill, table, and other items that are needed to prepare food and eat outside. Before children begin playing outside, make sure there are safety latches on any gates and that the banisters are secure to prevent children from getting stuck or falling to the ground. If you’re going to relax on the patio, then consider adding a comfortable chair, a hammock, or a shelf with books so that you have something to read while enjoying the fresh air.
3. Upgrade the Lights
Even if you’re only going to use the patio during the day, consider adding a few lights around the area so that it’s easier for people to see where they are walking when it does get dark if anyone happens to be outside. Lighting can also create a beautiful atmosphere for enjoying the sights and sounds of the outdoors in the spring when everything is coming alive in nature once again. Solar lights are an option and won’t leave you with a higher electric bill.
4. Do Design Projects
Whether you’re going to stain your patio area or give it a fresh coat of paint, try to get the larger design projects out of the way before adding the finishing touches. You want to paint or stain your patio when it’s warm and dry outside to minimize drying time. Once this step is complete, you can then work on adding flower pots, an outdoor rug, or colorful decorations that set your patio apart.
5. Invest in New Furniture
While it’s not a requirement, furniture can create a new living space if it’s used on your patio. There are usually outdoor sets that you can purchase when spring begins, such as a couch and chairs or a swing with a table. Determine how much seating you’re going to need before getting random items while also thinking about who is going to sit on the furniture. Some stores have chairs designed for children, which can make it a little more comfortable for them when they are on the patio.
6. Treat for Pests
Treat your patio for pests before you put furniture and decorations outside. Once it’s treated, you can place candles that keep mosquitoes and other insects away. Mothballs are good to use around the patio to keep snakes and larger pests from invading.
Your patio area can be a home away from home right in your backyard. With a few steps, you’ll have just the right space before the spring season begins.
