Tell us your best small idea for big business wins |
I started my writing business with a $0 budget and grew it to a consistent 6-figure annual revenue. There was no single “it factor” that led to my growth and success. But one idea that has continually paid off for me is to be active on LinkedIn. I share my blogs, post original content, network with other professionals, offer tips related to blogging/writing, and I even found other writers to join my team to help me take on more clients. |
Tell us about you; your background; brag about yourself! |
I’m a rare breed — I decided I was going to be a writer at the young age of four! I followed my childhood dreams throughout high school and college, but it still took me about eight years after college to figure out what I wanted my writing career to look like. Once I started freelance content and copywriting, all the pieces of my career just fell into place. Having started my business with basic blog article writing, I’ve expanded over the years to include different types of content writing, including web page copy, product descriptions, ebooks, case studies, and technical writing. I’ve also added services for my fellow freelancers to help them achieve sustainable success, including courses, webinars, and my blog, as well as plans for a podcast and book. I booked my first paid speaking opportunity in 2020, and earned feature stories about my business and expertise in Business Insider and TIME in 2022. My plan is to continue growing my personal brand and the coaching side of my business in 2023 while continuing to help the global businesses and brands I serve. |
Business is all about overcoming obstacles and creating opportunities for growth. What do you see as the real challenge right now? |
My biggest challenge at the moment is time poverty. With a myriad of ideas and avenues I’d like to explore, I’m still one person running a successful business. I’ve taken some steps to free up my time, including building a wonderful team of writers to help me say yes to more clients. But some things I have to handle myself, and I’m an overly ambitious person who has a habit of trying to do too much at once. |
On a lighter note, if you had the ability to pick any business superpower, what would it be and how would you put it into practice? |
The ability to clone myself. It would certainly solve the time poverty issue, and I could trust myself to make the right decisions and do things my own way. If that’s not an option, I’d settle for a magic wand that could do my keyword research, editing, and social media posting for me. |
What does “success” in 2023 mean to you? It could be on a personal or business level, please share your vision. |
Success is having the time to do the things you love and the financial security to not have to think twice about doing them. You don’t have to have the most money to achieve success. You simply need to be smart with your time and money. In 2022, I grabbed a new rung of the success ladder by shifting to a four-day work week. In 2023, I’m aiming for a new level of success by working even less to give me time to grow my brand. |
